Exercise is an important part of your dog's day

Exercising your dog

Dogs must be exercised on lead unless in a designated dog exercise area. Exercise should be done on a daily basis and should be suited to the size and energy of the dog.

Dog on-leash areas

Unless a dog is being exercised in a designated dog exercise area, dogs must be exercised on lead.  Exercise on a lead may involve walking or running the dog whether in public or on private property.

Exercise on a lead provides the opportunity to incorporate some basic training which if done on a regular basis creates a good relationship between dog and owner.

Dog on leash areas in Palmerston North include:

  • All streets, roads and footpaths within the district except those within the prohibited areas or dog exercise areas
  • Turitea walkway
  • Anzac Park (also known as Pork Chop Hill)
  • Clyde Crescent Drainage Reserve
  • Pioneer Highway Drainage Reserve
  • Non-playing areas of sports fields and parks not prohibited
  • Ashhurst Domain
  • Hokowhitu Lagoon (also known as Centennial Lagoon)
  • Riverlink walkway
  • The walkway around the racecourse except the prohibited time between 5.00am and 9.00am daily

  • Otira walkway.

Dog off-leash areas

Off the lead exercise is only permitted in designated areas within the City.  Off lead exercise is when you are with your dog and the dog is allowed off the leash but remains under your supervision and control.

Exercise off the lead may involve giving the dog an opportunity to run around a fenced property.  Exercise off the lead provides an excellent opportunity to observe the dog’s general health and also provides the chance for play and socialisation with the owner.

If training is to be incorporated with exercise then it is advisable to do the training at the outset followed by exercise off the lead. This is more rewarding for the dog than letting it loose then confining it on a lead to do some training. An association by the dog between on lead training and restriction of its movements can damage the effects of previous work on alead and create a setback with basic training.

However one undertakes to exercise a dog, it is important that exercise be done on a daily basis and be suited to the size and energy of the dog.
